Empowered Women in Manufacturing and Business: WAM Podcast Interview with Frances Brunelle

Anyone who believes starting your own business is a walk in the dog park is sadly mistaken! The CEO and Founder of Puppy Cake, Kelly Costello, shares her story and advice to new entrepreneurs on the WAM (Women and Manufacturing) podcast to Frances Brunelle, founder of Accelerated Manufacturing Brokers.

Kelly discusses with Fran that starting Puppy Cake was not an instant success. She explains there is a lot that happens in the “and then.” Many people believe Kelly started her own business in her apartment and then she did multi-million in sales but that’s just not true. In 2007, Kelly started Puppy Cake in her one-bedroom apartment in Bellevue with just a few flavors and mixed and packaged everything herself. Kelly then had the opportunity to appear on the popular television show, Shark Tank, and pitched her idea to five titans of industry who turned their own dreams into lucrative empires. This opportunity sparked a fire in her to take her dream and passion to the next level. Lori Greiner told Kelly, “I think you have a good product but I don’t think you have a good business.” That piece of feedback helped Kelly readjust and develop a portfolio that would be appealing and impressive to distributors.

Later in the interview, Fran asks Kelly to give the listeners some advice if they are looking to start their own business. Kelly replied with, “a tip I give other entrepreneurs as they’re growing their business is that if you can have your product be the answer to a search, there’s a strong possibility you’re going to be very successful.” Kelly also discusses with Fran that starting out slow is not a bad thing. Her production team has poked fun at her love of garage sales, but she claims this one of the keys to her success. There is no need to buy something brand new if something used will get the job done. Lastly, Kelly reminds young entrepreneurs that this is not a sprint and you have to be in it for the long haul. Building a successful business takes time but if you continue to make unique and quality products, distributors will see that your company can stand the test of time!

Overall, Kelly is happy that she has been able to build a brand from her love of baking quality and safe treats for dogs. This company is her passion and it shows in the amount of detail that goes into every homemade recipe and every product she launches. Puppy Cake: An Example of a Good Product and a Good Business

Recently, Kelly Costello had an interview with Industrial Sage where she dwelt on understanding the differences between a seemingly good product and a good business. It all bothers on how she made a good business out of her birthday cake for dogs idea. Kelly created an understanding of the two using her brand story. In November 2007, Puppy Cake was founded on the pedestal of how the business would grow to make it first million in few months. Unfortunately, the opposite was the scenario as Kelly struggled to get the necessary funding to run the business to profitability. Today, just like Kelly struggled with growing Puppy Cake in 2007, there are millions of businesses that are bound to close shop.

How 45 Minutes on Shark Tank Changed Puppy Cake Narrative

Kelly took the Puppy Cake story to Shark Tank in 2012 and this gave the business the necessary push it needed. Not that the business was able to raise funds from Shark Tank, but she got something more valuable to the business. Kelly got the right counsel and advice that helped her reposition and restructure Puppy Cake. It was on this pedestal that Puppy rode on from what it was in 2007 to what it has grown to become today. The failure of Puppy Cake from getting a line of funding on Shark Tank was the pitiful nature of her numbers, while she’s got a good product at that instance, she’s yet to get a good business around her dog birthday cake mixes idea

While on Shark Tank, Kelly was in-depth about her struggles with the business. Majorly, the inability to make sales. Today, 30% of businesses in the United States close shop essentially due to this same reason. But Kelly did not stop trying, she was true to herself on her inadequacies especially on face to face sales and cold calling. This was why she was referred to as Wanttoprenuer by Mark Cuban. This depicts an individual who indeed is pursuing to be an entrepreneur but does a bad job at it. There are a few things Kelly Took away from her Shark Tank session aside that they loved her birthday cakes for dogs idea and that underlines the difference between a good product and a good business;

Puppy Cake become a million-dollar company that it is today due to the bluntness of the guys at Shark Tank. They criticized Kelly’s approach to wanting to start a business and challenged her knowledge of running a successful business.

She was not only challenged, but was also given the right counsel that will push her business to the point of success. They made her realize that it’s not enough to have a good product if you cannot turn it into a profitable business.

It was on Shark Tank she got the advice to expand her line of products to increase from just dog birthday cakes mixes. An advice that made her go from having a good product to establishing her business.

While Kelly auditioned for Shark Tank in November 2011, the session did not air until February 2013. From that moment until now, Puppy Cake has enjoyed the right amount of media attention it needed and deserved.

There are not many business with the Puppy Cake’s birthday cakes for dogs idea in 2011 and this made the business even a unique one that caught the attention of her target audience.

Before now, Kelly was just an average entrepreneur but Shark Tank brought her to a new realization. That there’s a lot of potentials in her and her birthday cakes for dogs product that could turn the fortunes of Puppy Cake around for good.

She realized that Puppy Cake was not the business she’s proud of at that moment and she wanted to fight for the business. In her thoughts, the business was a point where she won’t want to touch it if she has a pile of cash somewhere.

Driven By Hunger To Be Creative With Birthday Cake For Dogs

Puppy Cake did not get the success it truly deserved immediately after Kelly’s Shark Tank era. Of course, the show gave her business a new found fame but it’s not enough to drive Kelly to success. It was something else that did the driving to success. Kelly went full-time into production and this means that she’ll be unable to feed or fill her car tank without the business staying profitable.

The further fueled her passion to think of the box and be successful at her business. She started setting targets. One of her targets was 500,000 sales which she made and realized it was not enough based on the manufacturing economies of scale. She later realized that even a million dollar was just a break-even point for her cake mixes for dog business.

How We Are Selling Our PuppyCake Products

For someone who was horrible at face to face sales and cold calling, she’s taken full advantage of the internet and digital marketing. Currently, there are three major ways through which PuppyCake products are sold; Amazon, our website, and through our retailers. These three sales channels have their own uniqueness for the PuppyCake brand. The brand is also Search engine optimized, a search for dog birthday cakes mixes will lead to any of our online sales channel and products.

This is why Kelly is able to tell other business owners to let their products to be an answer to a Google search and they will make money. There’s not better way to sell your products than utilizing digital marketing to the fullest.

Bottomline

Puppy Cake got to where it is today all thanks to Kelly’s hunger for success, the Shark Tank platform where she got it all together and her mechanically brilliant boyfriend turned husband who is really to contribute his technical knowledge to the business.

The community connects through online platforms and rare opportunities to meet in person at trade shows or speaking engagements.

The rarity of face-to-face meetings inspired Tiffany Krumins, one of the first “Shark Tank” entrepreneurs to land an investment deal (Ava the Elephant®), to extend her trip for a speaking engagement in the New York Tri-State area and organize the largest-ever gathering of “Shark Tank” alumni. Nearly 50 companies came for the “Shark Tank” Reunion 2019 in New York City on Friday, September 20, 2019.

Is it safe for me to eat?

Our products are all-natural, human grade ingredients, but are not FDA approved and not recommended for human consumption

Can my cat eat these products?

Yes, your cat can eat Puppy Cake products, but they may not like the taste. Please be mindful of proportions

Are these products made in the USA?

Yes! All ingredients are sourced from the United States, with the exception of tapioca starch and dried coconut

Can I get Puppy Cake products sent to me if I live outside of the United States?

What are the ingredients?

Please refer to your Puppy Cake packaging, ALL ingredients are listed. NOTE: All ingredients vary from product to product. Most cake mixes are made with either rice flour or wheat flour, their flavoring, cane sugar, baking powder and salt

How well does the cake bake in the microwave?

For satisfactory results, we suggest a high-powered microwave, i.e. 1500watts

What kind of icing should I use?

Icing is provided in each cake box

The icing I made is too thick.

Carefully add additional drops of water at a time to create the desired thickness

The icing I made is too runny

Add 1 tablespoon of peanut butter to the icing and stir. If desired thickness is not achieved, carefully add 1 more tablespoon of peanut butter. NOTE: The color of the icing will no longer be white

What size pan should I use to bake a cake?

We recommend a 6” round cake pan, but you can also use an 8” round cake pan or an 8×8 casserole dish. NOTE: If using anything larger than a 6” cake pan, the cake may come out thin

How many cupcakes does a box make?

A box of cake mix will make 8 regular sized cupcakes or 24 mini cupcakes

How many cookies does a bag make?

A bag of cookie mix makes 18 -2” cookies

Is the ice cream already frozen when it’s delivered to my house?

No! Puppy Scoops is a shelf-stable powder mix that you add water to and freeze

How much ice cream do I give my dog?

Small Dog: 1 scoop
Medium Dog: 2 scoops
Large Dog: 3-4 scoops
Huge Dog: 4-5 Scoops

How much cake do I give my dog?

Please be considerate of the size of your dog in relation to the portion you give them. NOTE: A small dog should NEVER be fed the entire cake!

What is the shelf life of the cake once I bake it?

You can store your cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freezer for up to 2 months

What is the shelf life of the ice cream once I make it?

4-6 weeks in the freezer

How much salt/ sodium is in the cake mix?

An entire cake box contains 105mg of sodium

How much salt/ sodium is in the ice cream mix?

An entire ice cream container contains 28mg of sodium

National Cheesecake Day... Even for Your Dog!

Gosh, another National “Something” Day, and lucky for us, it’s fits well with our products. So, Happy National Cheesecake Day. And not only do we get an excuse to enjoy some cheesecake today, but so does your dog.

Puppy Cake has created (and has had in stock for some time now) two flavors of Cheesecake Mixes for your dog; Peanut Butter and Salted Caramel. Our cheesecake mixes are grain-free and super easy to make at home for your special pup. I mean, what’s better than giving your dog a healthy treat that requires NO BAKING?! Exactly, nothing!

But let me walk you through the super simple and easy steps to make a cheesecake for you dog. And since it’s National Cheesecake Day, now both YOU and YOUR PUP can indulge in some cheesecake, guilt-free ??

YOU’LL NEED:

1/3 Cup of hot tap water

1 Cup of hot tap water

6” Cheesecake Springform Pan (or Cupcake pan with paper liners)

2 Bowls

Let’s start with making the coconut crumble crust first. Empty the contents of the crust mix into a bowl and add 1/3 cup of hot tap water. Stir well! Press the crust mixture evenly into the cheesecake springform pan. Once completed, please the cheesecake pan into the freezer while you mix the cheesecake.

Onto making the cheesecake, in a medium bowl, stir the cheesecake mix and add 1 cup of hot tap water. Stir for 2 minutes until all of the lumps are removed. Bring the springform pan out of the freezer and pour the cheesecake batter over the crust. Tap the pan on the countertop gently, to remove air pocket and evenly distribute batter.

Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place pan into the refrigerator for at least 2 hours!

Wah-la! You have a delectable cheesecake, made specifically for your pup!

Now finally, slice a piece of cheesecake and serve to your pup! I invited our Production manager’s 2 boys, Rouge and Bruce, who are my favorite set of puppy twins. I mean can these 2 be any cuter? And let me tell you, they gobbled every last crumb of their Peanut Butter Cheesecake.

A Guinness World Record for the Biggest Dog Cake?

Can you imagine baking the largest puppy cake and getting a Guinness World Record to show for it? Well Service Dogs, Inc. from Dripping Springs, TX was able to walk away with that awesome title.

Looking for a new and exciting challenge for her and her coworkers at the Mighty Texas Dog Walk Fundraiser, Sheri Soltes, president and founder of SDI, came up with the idea to attempt to make the world’s largest puppy cake, and they did just that!

The massive dog cake included 35lbs of dog kibble, 72 cans of dog food, 17 dozen eggs, flour and water. The icing on the cake was actually instant mashed potatoes. The final weight of the world’s largest cake: 304lbs.

But what is a dog cake without a dog eating the cake? After the final weigh and the official picture taken, slices of cake were gobbled up by the dogs who patiently waited.

Even though SDI created the world’s largest puppy cake, they were also able to raise $114,000 during the fundraiser. The funds raised for SDI will help dog’s in their care. What’s better than that?!
