Pumpkin and Carob Layered Cake - Yum!!

by | | 0 comment(s)

I seriously cannot help myself when it comes to baking for my dog. And I’m assuming you can’t either and that’s why you’re here ?? Moment of confession, as I was scrolling through Pinterest looking for a scrumptious dessert for, yes, myself, I stumbled across a pumpkin and chocolate layered cake. Not only did I say “Absolutely”, but then I thought, “Oh man, my dog would LOVE this dessert.”

I know what you’re probably thinking, that dogs cannot have chocolate, and yes that’s true. But Puppy Cake created a Carob Cake Mix that is “dog friendly” and safe for your pup to eat. And really, what’s better than chocolate and pumpkin together anyway?!

So, let’s get started on how to make your dog their very own “Pumpkin & Carob” Layered Cake. First, lets start with what you’ll need to bake this cake:

  • 1 box of Pumpkin Spice Cake Mix (wheat-free)
  • 2 boxes of Carob Cake Mix
  • Icing – which is already provided in each box of cake mix. (Convenient, I know) ??
  • 3 – 6” Round Cake Pans (If you only have one pan, that’s fine. You can bake each flavor separately and let each cool, before using the cake pan again.)

For the Cake:

  • 1/4 Oil
  • 3/4 Water
  • Egg

For the Icing:

  • Water

Here we go!

First, let’s bake the carob cake mix. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Then follow the directions on the back of the cake box by mixing 1 egg, 1/4 cup of oil and 3/4 cup of water. Mix together until all ingredients are blended together and lumps are gone in the batter.

Spray 1 – 6” cake pan with non-stick cooking spray and pour the carob cake batter into the cake pan. Place the cake pan in the oven for about 20 minutes until a toothpick placed in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Follow the same steps above for the pumpkin spice cake mix. Our cake layers are going to go; Carob, Pumpkin, Carob, so you’ll need to make 2 boxes of carob cake mix.

*NOTE* If you believe that 3 cakes will be too much for your dog (and please consider the size of your pup and feed them in moderation), an option is to use only 1 box of carob cake mix and split the batter between 2 cake pans.

Once all three cake pans have been removed from the oven, start on the icing. Each box of cake mix contains a packet of yogurt icing. You’ll want to use all three packets of icing on the cake! Each packet of icing requires 2 TBSP of water. Mix all three packets with 6 TBSP of water. * You can add more or less water to the icing for your desired consistency.

Once all three cakes have cooled, place one of the carob cakes on a plate and a small dollop of icing and spread the icing to cover the top of the cake. Then repeat, by placing the pumpkin spice cake down on top of the carob cake and spreading a dollop of icing all over the top. Finally, repeat the last step with the remaining carob cake.

When the 3-layered cake has been formed, complete the cake by icing the entire cake, top and sides!
